Our mission: To collect urban apples which would otherwise be wasted, and make them into a tasty alcoholic beverage.

Welcome to CityCider.org.uk

Let's make city cider from urban apples!

Lots of people have apple trees growing in their urban gardens or allotments. Often the fruits from these go to waste. Let's collect them all up and make cider from them. I know a whole range of medium to large scale cider producers whose presses we could use (near Bristol, but if other towns pick up on this I'm sure we can find a nearby press).

We could all be drinking our own urban cider next summer!

First cider finished, second cider starting

My Bramley cider was made from too-early Bramleys + eating apples. I knew it was going to be sharp and I was right! Everyone knows how sour a Bramley is, but it's actually got a lot of sugar in it too - I couldn't see much difference in the sugar levels of the Bramleys compared to the eaters.

Some great old articles on building cidermaking equipment

Searching through Google's collection of old scanned publications, I found a couple of great articles about making cider. They are from "Popular Mechanics" and "Popular Science" and so take a typically robust approach to the process, in other words, building everything from scratch.

Early first press

Having not had a great upswell of interest in the urban cider project, but having picked some apples last weekend with my good friend Tim, and having got the promise of the loan of a scratter and press from another old friend, Craig, I'm about to press my very first juice this weekend.
